Austria is slowly coming into its own in the international wine market. In the past few years, the country has made great strides in not only quantity but quality, introducing a new classification system similar to that of France and Italy in 2003.

Most of all, its wines boast a variety of styles, characters, and terroirs. Austria is really white wine country known for extraordinary Rieslings that range from bone dry to extremely rich and sweet and for Grüner-Veltliner, a dry alternative to Chardonnay that is particularly well suited to food. Mitchell Wines, through it strategic partnership with Ewald Moseler Selections, has dramatically expanded its inventory to include some of the finest Austrian wines available today. Ewald’s extraordinary commitment to quality and value comes through in some extraordinary red and white offerings from an unheralded wine producing region.

BURGENLAND
Peter Schandl
Established in 1741, this family estate is run by Peter Schandl and his family. Peter continues on 250 years of tradition and success and is known in Austria and Europe as one of the top quality estates. Both his son Paul and daughter Barbara, educated at renowned wine estates in South Africa, New Zealand and California have joined the family business and have added their unique touch to the wines.

The Peter Schandl estate is located in the town of Rust in the Neusiedlersee-Hügelland wine-growing region in Burgenland in Austria. It has been owned by the family for more than 250 years, since 1741. Paul and his sister Barbara Schandl run both the wine estate and the wine bar that is attached to it.

KAMPTAL
Thomas Leithner
The estate is located in the small town of Langenlois in the Kamptal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The family has been involved in wine production for centuries. The great-grandfather of the current owner, Thomas Leithner, was the well-known vine breeder Dr. Fritz Zweigelt (1888-1964). The vineyard area totals ten hectares, with holdings in the following sites: Fraupoint, Schenkenbichl and Steinhaus. 75% of the area is planted with the white varieties Grüner Veltliner (main variety), Riesling, Traminer, Chardonnay and Neuburger, as well as, naturally, with the red grape variety created by the great-grandfather, Zweigelt. The symbol shown on the label and in the logo is the praying mantis (Mantis Religiosa), which is intended to symbolize an integrated, sustainable approach to wine production.

NIEDEROESTEREICH
Broadbent
The Broadbent name has been synonymous with fine wine for more than four decades, beginning with the renowned career of British wine critic, writer and auctioneer Michael Broadbent and continuing with his son, the importer Bartholomew Broadbent. Bartholomew Broadbent has partnered with family-owned wineries around the globe to produce wines rich with the essence of place and tradition. Broadbent wines represent authentic character and infinite pleasure.

The Niederösterreich region in lower Austria has a cool continental climate growing area with the Danube river as its lifeline. It is the biggest quality wine region in Austria. It is the only Austrian region where GV and Riesling are grown on limestone. A juicy white wine, with plenty of lime, peach and green apple flavors. Broadbent's Gruner Veltliner is elegant and delicious.

WACHAU
Sighardt Donabaum
Sighardt Donabaum, the oldest of nine children, is the sixth generation proprietor of this family winery. Founded in 1683 and operated out of an 800 year old house, Donabaum has only recently made a splash in the wine trade. The vineyards, located one mile north of the Danube River on dramatic south facing slopes, produce wines of impressive weight, spice and concentration, somewhat atypical of the region. Sighardt’s highly experimental outlook sets him apart from most other Wachau producers. He allows his fermentations to stop naturally rather than pushing them to finish, leaving his wines with a degree of residual sweetness that serves to round them out.
