By joining forces with Ewald Moseler Selections, Mitchell Wines has made a strong commitment to German wines. The increasing popularity of German wines together with a new emphasis on a well balanced and food friendly style has made this an ever more viable segment of the fine wine market. Either Ewald or your Mitchell Wines salesperson can assist you in selecting from among our inventory of the finest German wines available.

If you ask some wine journalists, connoisseurs, trade insiders, or even non-German wine producers which wines they find the most exciting you will hear German wines being mentioned with persistent frequency. Authorities on the subject, like Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson, or Stuart Pigott keep reminding the world that Germany’s finest wines, usually Rieslings, are among the finest wines made anywhere on the globe.

A growing list of superb producers, committed to the highest quality standards, and a string of very good vintages have increased significantly the chance to find profound wines of individuality, breed, elegance, and depth.

MOSEL
Ackermann
Anne and Harald Junglen own 6.25 acres in Zeltingen. Most of the vines grow in blue slate in the steepest vineyards of Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg and Sonnenuhr. Only cultivation by hand is possible in the rocky soil. Low yields, and carefully handling of the grapes and the wine in the cellar produce classic Mosel Riesling with fresh fruit and a lemony dry finish.

Jos. Christoffel Jr.
Another small, family owned estate in Ürzig with a fantastic library of older vintages. Rated with "3 Grapes" in Gault Millau's "Weinguide Deutschland".

The other Christoffel family in Ürzig, this one related by marriage to the Prüm family in Wehlen. The estate is run by Karl Josef Christoffel (KaJo) who has decided it's time to release some older wines from his extensive library. All wines are fermented in the traditional 1000 Liter barrels with the natural east. This gives the wines a great aging potential.

Bernhard Eifel
The Bernhard Eifel family has grown grapes since 1635. Almost all the vineyards are classified as Grand Cru. To produce great wines, Bernhard Eifel believes that nature is an important factor. Climate, micro-organisms and soil are the major factors he uses to produce first class wine. He is recognized by many European Wine Publications as a new rising star. Bernhard believes wine should be fun, it should increase your imagination and should bring people together.

Dr Hermann
Dr. Hermann Winery, the Riesling-Estate, is managed by the father and son team of Rudi and Christian Hermann. Their philosophy is that quality starts in the vineyard with restrained pruning, hand harvesting, natural and careful cultivation of vineyard soil. The result is beautiful, elegant wines from some of the most famous vineyard sites in the world. The Hermann’s specialize in Riesling grown on steep rock slopes of the famous vineyards of the Erdener Prälat, Erdener Treppchen, and the Ürziger Würzgarten. All of their vineyards grow exclusively on old vines, ungrafted Riesling vines which deliver beautiful, complex Riesling wines.

Heymann Löwenstein
It started 400 million years ago. The collision of the continents compressed the slit which was washed up in the South Seas near the shores of the Old Red Continent. Slate was created. Today the slate rock rises up out of the Moselle valley. Our ancestors created a unique artificial landscape. You can say that the vines act as a medium as they transfer the character of the stony soil to the glass so that you can taste the prehistoric sea. This is how the exciting fascination of the terroir "Heymann-Löwenstein" is created in the uniqueness of every single vineyard.

Kees-Kieren
The estate was founded many generations ago. Since 1980 the brothers Ernst Josef and Werner Kees have run the Kees-Kieren estate and cultivated Riesling with enthusiasm and love for nature in the steep hills in Graach. The brothers Kees produce Riesling with finesse, elegance and excellent balance.

Pazen
Delicious Rieslings, and great values, from an old family friend. For as long as Ewald can remember, the Pazens have been the family next door. From a few acres of vines in the very good Zeltinger Himmelreich vineyard, brothers Reinhold and Wilfried Pazen make light, delicately fruity wines that always have a clean, refreshing lemony finish. These well-crafted wines are among the best values we can offer.

Schmitges
A rising star in the town of Erden. Top-quality estate producing rich, lively Rieslings from great vineyards in Erden.

Selbach
In addition to running the family wine estate (Selbach-Oster), Johannes Selbach has this négociant company that makes good-quality Mosel wines from purchased grapes. The situation in Germany is much the same as in Burgundy, with many small growers who can’t really afford to make and market their own wines. It’s up to companies like Selbach to select the best small growers and combine their grapes to make wines in quantities that are practical.
The real advantage for wine lovers is that Selbach can make very affordable wines from very high-quality vineyards, such as Piesporter Goldtröpfchen and Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay.

Selbach Oster
A top-quality estate producing very elegant Rieslings from great Middle Mosel vineyards. Selbach-Oster is consistently one of the finer estates in the Middle Mosel. Winemaker Johannes Selbach is one of the new generation of talented young guns in Germany and is tenacious in his pursuit of new ways to improve the quality of his wines. At the same time, however, he steadfastly upholds the tradition of the estate, which has been in the family since 1661. Johannes strives to capture a true expression of the pure Riesling fruit created by the terrior of each vineyard site.

Wachtenburg Winzer
Wachenheim, on the foot of the Pfälzer Forest, is surrounded by endless vineyards and has the benefit of a mediterranean climate. It is famous for excellent wines. Wine cultivation has been a tradition for over 2000 years. For the winemakers of Wachenheim it is important to not only use the experience of older generations but also to be open minded towards newer developments in winemaking.

RHEINHESSEN

Wehrheim
The Eugen Wehrheim estate is located in the well known wine town Nierstein. The weathered, red volcanic soil, the steep, sunny slopes and the warming effect of the river enable them to make Rieslings that always have excellent ripeness and a deep, complex, exotic fruitiness.

Klaus Whehrheim, owner and winemaker cultivates 49 acres of vineayards most of them located on steep slopes facing the Rhine river.

The vinards are culivated by hand in a organic wine growing philosophy

RUWER
Karthaeuserhof
One of two legendary estates in the tiny Ruwer valley, making extraordinarily concentrated, compact wines from their monopole vineyard Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg. Member of the VDP.

SAAR
Von Hoevel

Van Volxem
Roman Niewodniscanski’s Van Volxem estate is controversial. Not too far back, he purchased this estate, located on the site of a Jesuit monastery in the centre of Wiltingen (Saar) with the view to restoring it to make the sorts of wines it would have made when German Rieslings fetched higher prices than Bordeaux.

Dr. Wagner
Dr. Heinz Wagner, owner of the Dr. Wagner estate, comes from a distinguished family of sparkling wine producers. It’s this heritage that gives him his hyper-critical standards for selection at harvest time. Sparkling wines require exceptionally clean fruit, so Heinz goes through his vineyards several times before harvest to remove any grapes that are even the slightest bit unhealthy.
When you apply that kind of quality control to already outstanding vineyards, including the very best parts of the well-known Ockfener Bockstein and Ayler Kupp sites, you end up with amazingly pure wines that are bursting with fresh, lively fruit.

WURTEMBURG
Ernst Dautel
"A great wine is like a mosaic...
...many different stones are joined and results in the piece of art." – Ernst Dautel
Member of the VDP. Rated with "3 Grapes" in Gault Millau's "Weinguide Deutschland".

Riesling - Schieferterrassen 2008
