Italy is truly the Land of Wine, leading all other nations in annual production volume and enumerating 20 regions including the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Wine and food are nowhere else on earth so closely wedded. Italians refer to the “Mediterranean Holy Trinity of Wine, Bread & Olive Oil.” In recent decades, the Mediterranean “boot” has leaped to the forefront in exporting vinous products, with premium quality erasing the old image of Chianti in a straw-covered bottle sitting on a red & white checkered tablecloth.

Some of the most prestigious Italian reds spring from the Nebbiolo grape, which goes under the names Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara. These renditions differ according to regional micro-climates. Italy produces sparkling wines from more varietals than any other nation, led by Asti Spumante and Prosecco.
