The Bekaa Valley, adjacent to the Mediterranean coast, is an ideal premium vineyard location, referred to in the Bible as “land of milk and honey”. In 1930, a Frenchman, Gaston Hochar, founded an estate surrounding an 18th century castle. Vineyards were replanted and a tradition of long-lived, richly fl avored wines in a Bordeaux style began.

Chateau Musar
The Hochar Pere et Fils label adorns a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan. The Chateau Musar label represents the same red blend from honored vintages. The Cuvee Musar wines are younger, lighter blends fashioned in red, rosé‚ and white bottlings available in 375’s and 750’s. The white is a marriage of Obeideh and Merwah grapes native to the Bekaa region and ancestors to European plantings of Chardonnay and Semillon originally derived from cuttings carried back to Europe by Crusaders.

The vineyards of Château Musar are located at an altitude of over 3,000 feet (1,000 meters) in the Bekaa Valley where the vines are sheltered by the surrounding mountains running parallel to the Mediterranean coast. They cover 180 hectares and produce a limited yield of about 35 hl/ha.

Château Musar makes every effort at producing totally natural wines, letting each one develop its own character.

2002 Hochar Pere Et Fils
A blend of Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan, with a small amount of Grenache, last released in 2007. Rather too sweet on opening, however, some aeration answered all questions. Rescued from simplicity by some gamey notes on the nose that gave it a touch of complexity. It also has a bright demeanor and some tannin, all of which made it seem more serious, age worthy and interesting. As it airs, the sweet fruit blends gradually into the whole. In terms of fruit, it already seems reasonably mature, but it still has some tannic power on the finish. Here, it comes closer to being a nuance rather than a dominant feature as this is in a more modern, straightforward style. Drink now to 2013. 88 Points – Robert Parker
